L'Enfant et les Sortileges by Maurice Ravel and Colette
Costume Design for Carnival Performance
The aim of this project was to design a carnival performance based on the opera L'Enfant at les Sortileges, thinking about how the story could be presented through a parade. Colette captures a world of a rebellious child, who causes mischief after being scolded by his mother. The objects and animals who fall victim to his tantrum come to life and teach him a lesson.
These designs are influenced by the Surrealist and Dada art movements, which took place at the same time as the opera was being written. The exaggerated collage style fit with the carnival theme and the opera as the story is viewed by the eyes of a child.
