The Libertine by Stephen Jeffereys
Set & Costume Design for Nottingham Playhouse
Director: Martin Berry
The Libertine is a historical drama and comedy of manners, set during the 17th centrury Restoration Period. The play follows John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, a poet, playwright and renowned libertine who compulsively test the limits of his society. He falls in love with Elizabeth Barry, an aspiring young actress who he attempts to mold, who is more than his match. This design combines the historical context with a modern style, influenced by 17th century theatre and architecture, and 1980s New Romantic fashion.
